The fine print
FY2026 reform — the ¥1.78M wall
From FY2026, the sum of basic deduction and minimum guaranteed employment income deduction rises from ¥1.6M to ¥1.78M. Lower-income earners gain the most in take-home pay.
How social insurance is calculated
Health insurance is standard monthly compensation × rate ÷ 2 (split with employer); Kyokai Kenpo rates vary by prefecture. Pension is a flat 18.3% nationally, split into 9.15% for the employee.
Care insurance (40+)
Between 40 and 65, you're a Category 2 insured person under long-term care insurance. The rate is 1.59% (FY2026), split with the employer. Past 65, it's collected separately from your pension.
Resident tax: paid in arrears
Resident tax is based on last year's income and collected from June through the following May. New hires owe nothing the first year — but switching jobs can put a real squeeze on cash flow.
